The medicinal powers of St. John’s Wort (Hypericum Perforatum) have been known for more than 2000 years. Often referred to as ‘The Sunshine Herb’, Hypericum has been hailed as the natural alternative to anti-depressant drugs. In Germany, this herbal remedy is licensed and outsells Prozac. The plant’s healing powers lie in hypericin, which is present in the dark red juice secreted from the plant’s storage cells. Experiments show that St. John’s Wort inhibits the depletion of neurotransmitters. If these are depleted, the area of the brain dealing with mood and emotion is affected.
Hypericum effectiveness in long-term therapy is not known, therapeutic effects are not to be expected before 2-3 weeks of therapy.
There is no negative influence on general performance or the ability to drive a car or operate heavy machinery.
